Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

Basilica

One of the four papal basilicas and the only one that has conserved its palaeo-Christian structure, it sits atop the Esquiline Hill, where the Virgin allegedly suggested it be built when she appeared to Pope Liberius in a dream. It is also known as the “basilica of snow”, as its outlines

were made out by the same pope after an exceptionally heavy snow on the hill, on 5 August 538. Here you can admire sculptures and paintings by some of the great masters, the splendid Borghese Chapel and the mosaic façade by the architect Ferdinando Fuga.
